Christening & Delivery of the 11,500 dwt Ice Class Chemical Tanker M. T. ASTORIA - The Most Advanced Chemical Tanker Built by Jurong Shipyard To-date

Singapore, Jul 30, 1998

Jurong Shipyard today announces the christening and delivery of the 11,500 dwt Ice Class Chemical Tanker to its owner, Rederi AB Veritas Tankers.

Rederi AB Veritas Tankers is a well-established Swedish family-owned shipping company, headed by patriarch Mr Bengt Johnsson and based on the island of Donso, off Goteborg, Sweden. The Johnssons have been in the shipping business for generations and the Company owns a fleet of specialized vessels operating in Sweden and the Baltic region. In 1996, Renderi AB Veritas Tankers decided to renew its fleet with a newbuilding for their Baltic operations. The Shipowner spent several months evaluating major yards in the Western Hemisphere but finally concluded this Shipbuilding Contract with Jurong Shipyard, located in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Mrs Anna-Stina Johnsson, the Lady Sponsor and wife of the owner will christen the vessel, M. T. ""ASTORIA"" at this morning's ceremony. As the christening of the vessel is a major event, the entire Johnsson family members (the sons, daughter-in-law, daughter, son-in-law and grand children), including their friends and major customers are here in Singapore to participate and witness the event.

This US$27 million newbuilding contract for the construction of the 11,500 dwt chemical tanker with full double hull is equipped with modern sophisticated equipment with capabilities of a one-man bridge control as well as unmanned machinery space. It is the most advanced chemical vessel built by Jurong Shipyard to-date. The Ice Class Chemical tanker, measuring 139.9m x 21.5m x 10.5m and with a service speed of 15 knots is designed to carry chemicals in 12 tanks. The vessel leaves Jurong Shipyard in early August 1999 and will be on long-term charter to Fortum Oil & Gas. The vessel will be employed in the Baltic Sea and suited for the winter ice conditions there. The equipment, automation and accommodation installed onboard are in strict compliance to the latest IMO rules and regulations with the furnishings fully meeting the Scandinavian standards.

According to Mr Chang King, General Manager of Newship Division, ""this newbuilding contract has certainly been one of the most challenging for Jurong Shipyard. The standards are very high. Quality is certainly the defining criteria for the vessel. We worked very closely with the Shipowner's building team during the ship construction phase. As a result we are very pleased to present today one of the finest advanced chemical tankers in the world.""
