Our Approach

Our Green Solutions

From harnessing technology and providing innovative energy and water solutions to carefully planning urban developments, sustainability considerations are embedded in our business decisions. As our businesses consume primary resources, we recognise that responsible stewardship can have great impact.

Efficient Power and Steam Generation

Sembcorp constantly harnesses the power of technology to achieve greater efficiency and lower emissions in our power, steam and desalination operations. These technologies include combined cycle gas turbines, cogeneration, and combined power and desalination technologies.

Natural Gas

For more than a decade, we have been at the forefront of supplying cleaner and more efficient energy for Singapore. We are the country’s first commercial importer and retailer of natural gas, considered the cleanest and most environmentally-friendly of all fossil fuels.

Renewable Energy

In terms of renewable energy, we run a woodchip-fuelled biomass energy plant that supplies sustainably-produced process steam to our customers on Jurong Island in Singapore. We are also building Jurong Island’s first large-scale steam boiler fuelled exclusively by industrial and commercial waste. These energy-from-waste plants use waste collected and processed by our solid waste management business.

Overseas, our renewable energy business is also growing. In China, we have wind power assets in Hebei and Inner Mongolia. In India, we own and operate a portfolio of wind and solar power assets spread across six states in the country’s southern, western and central regions.

In the UK, in addition to the biomass power plant in Teesside which uses sustainable wood for fuel, Sembcorp is also developing our first energy-from-waste facility in our Wilton International site. The new facility will be using municipal and commercial waste as fuel.

Sembcorp is a global leader in industrial water and wastewater solutions. Our sustainable approach helps us meet the growing needs of industries and communities while supporting the development of emerging economies.

Specialised Industrial Water Management for China

Sembcorp's full suite of total water solutions have found application in one of the world's fast-growing and industrialising economies, China. There, we push the envelope for better and more sustainable wastewater treatment, water reclamation and industrial water supply solutions. We also support the specialised water needs of petrochemical and coal-to-chemical industries, while helping to reduce their impact on the environment.

In 2005, we became the first company in the country to be allowed to treat highly-concentrated industrial wastewater directly. Until then, companies had to pre-treat the effluent before discharging it for further treatment. Being able to discharge effluent - which is up to eight times more concentrated - directly to our wastewater treatment facility was a boon for companies operating in the country and a new milestone for advanced wastewater management in China.

Desalination for Water-stressed Regions

Our desalination plants in the Middle East, meanwhile, help meet growing demand in the water stressed region with a sustainable water supply. Our US$1.7 billion plant in Fujairah in the UAE and our US$1 billion plant in Salalah, Oman, produce 130 million imperial gallons and 15 million imperial gallons of desalinated water per day respectively.

Water Reclamation as Alternative Water Source

Sembcorp's water reclamation business conserves precious water resources and offers a sustainably-sourced alternative water supply to industries and households.

We were a pioneer in reclaiming industrial effluent on Jurong Island in Singapore and today our Sembcorp NEWater Plant in Singapore is one of the largest water recycling plants in the world.

Resource recovery in Singapore

To reduce waste ending up in landfills and incineration facilities, Sembcorp provides advanced waste treatment and resource recovery, including producing renewable energy from waste.

Our waste-to-resource facilities in Singapore extract recyclables from waste collected through SembWaste, the leading solid waste management operator in the country. Sembcorp also operates a construction and demolition materials recovery facility, recovering timber, hardcore and fines, as well as ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Furthermore, we offer a comprehensive range of waste paper recycling services, from collection, sorting and baling, to the bulk supply of recovered paper to paper manufacturers.

Sembcorp is a valued partner to governments, helping to lay the foundation for development in these countries. Our large-scale urban developments draw foreign investment into emerging markets, providing the economic engine for growth.

We design and build our developments with the future in mind. At our fourth Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) in Hai Phong, Vietnam, for instance, a third of the area is dedicated to green space and the preservation of local flora and fauna. Existing wetlands on the site as well as tributaries from the Cam River running through the township have been preserved and incorporated into the development.

Similarly, more than half the area of the Sino-Singapore Nanjing Eco Hi-tech Island is preserved for eco-tourism. The development features green roofs to alleviate the urban heat effect, as well as rain collection canopies. Wetland biofilters and park connectors have also been incorporated into the integrated development's overall design. The Singapore-Sichuan Hi-tech Innovation Park that Sembcorp is also currently developing in China will focus on technology-driven, knowledge-intensive industries and showcase a modern, innovative and low carbon emission city.
