Official Opening Of SembCorp Cogen - Singapore's Most Efficient Independent Power Producer

Singapore, Nov 09, 2001

SembCorp Cogen (SembCogen), a joint venture between SembUtilities (70 per cent) and Tractebel (30 per cent), held the official opening of its 815-megawatt combined cycle cogeneration plant on Jurong Island this morning. Selling electricity to the Singapore Electricity Pool and process steam to industrial customers on Jurong Island, the plant is the first Independent Power Producer in Singapore, as well as the country’s largest and most efficient cogeneration plant.

Representing a S$650 million investment, SembCogen will not only enhance the power generation capabilities of SembCorp Utilities (SembUtilities), but will also complement the integrated utilities services currently provided by it through SUT Sakra and SUT Seraya.

With the operation of the SembCogen plant, SembUtilities is now Singapore’s only integrated energy provider. From the supply of natural gas to the generation of power and steam, SembUtilities is able to provide customers with cost-effective solutions across the entire energy value chain. SembUtilities’ power supply arm, SembCorp Power, has signed up more than 60 power supply accounts in excess of 300 megawatts as at November 2001.

Mr Tang Kin Fei, President & CEO of SembUtilities, said: “The commercial operations of SembCogen marks the start of SembUtilities’ participation and growth in Singapore’s deregulated power industry. As the only integrated energy provider in Singapore, SembUtilities is well-positioned to be a leading power and integrated utilities player the Asia Pacific.”
