SMOE's New Yard In Batam Moves Ahead With First Steel Cut
Indonesia, Nov 03, 2003
- SMOE Pte Ltd, the offshore engineering division of SembCorp Utilities today marked the start of the first project to be undertaken at its new fabrication yard in Batam, Indonesia.
SMOE’s Batam yard, which will be fully operating by February 2004, is located in the Kabil area of the island. The new yard, SMOE’s first purpose-built facility in the Asia Pacific, will support SMOE's expansion in the Indonesian oil and gas market as well as carry out contracting activities from SMOE’s yard in Singapore.
A Steel Cutting Ceremony was held today for the first project to be undertaken at the Batam yard. The fabrication work consists of two bridges weighing 150 tonnes and 416 tonnes respectively and is a sub-component for the Idd El Shargi North Dome Phase 2 Expansion Project which is currently being constructed in Singapore.
Occupying an area of 14.9 hectares on the east coast of Batam Island, the yard features a construction area of 120,000 square metres, a workshop area of 6,300 square metres and a 40-metre long load-out quay capable of handling a load-out capacity of 10,000 tonnes. The waterfront depth of seven metres will be increased to ten metres during the second phase of development that is scheduled to proceed within three years. By then, the yard is expected to cover an area of up to 32 hectares.
SMOE will be providing full start-up assistance for the new yard with resources, equipment and tools.
“The new facilities in Batam were developed in anticipation of SMOE's heavier construction workload. In addition to securing our position as one of the leaders in the oil and gas industry, we continue to deliver on our commitment to an exemplary safety record, high quality of work and timely delivery,” said Mr M.P. Premraj, Executive Vice President of SMOE.
The new yard will be working in accordance to SMOE's management systems until it eventually receives its own accreditation programmes for health, safety and environment as well as quality. SMOE has accreditations in OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001:2000.
