Working Towards Zero Waste

As a leading sustainable environmental services provider, SembWaste works closely with our customers to achieve their recycling targets. One prime example is SembWaste’s close collaboration with Marina Bay Sands to significantly boost recycling and minimise the amount of waste ending up in landfills.
Our dedicated waste management team worked with Marina Bay Sands to drive recycling rates up from 25% in the first half of 2021 to 29% in the second half of 2021.
In 2021, Marina Bay Sands generated more than 2,200 tonnes of recyclables. This was on top of 84 tonnes of wood and construction waste brought in for recycling from the hotel’s renovation project.
We believe that segregating waste at their source is an effective approach of maximising recycling rates. It also avoids contamination of recyclables – a common problem in traditional commingled recycling collection.
Regular waste audits were also conducted to track waste disposal behaviours and identify potential waste streams that can be diverted away from landfills. This information helped to uncover targeted solutions to further improve recycling rates.
Marina Bay Sands further incentivised the teams who achieved set recycling rate targets.
Besides recycling, SembWaste also operated five food digesters to process about 100 tonnes of food waste generated at Marina Bay Sands every month.
Moving forward, we will continue to equip our customers with the latest recycling and waste management solutions, helping them to contribute to Singapore’s pursuit of a zero waste future.
