May 13, 2010
Sembcorp has maintained its commitment to support young sportsmen in pursuing tertiary education, sponsoring scholarships and bursaries for promising young badminton players to the tune of $50,000. The scholarships and bursaries were awarded under the SBA-Sembcorp Trailblazer-Wong Kok Siew Scholarships for Sports, which is jointly administered by Sembcorp and the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA).
The SBA-Sembcorp Trailblazer-Wong Kok Siew Scholarships were awarded to 12 recipients pursuing tertiary education, while six recipients received the SBA-Sembcorp Trailblazer-Wong Kok Siew Bursaries. The total of 18 recipients is a three-fold increase from the six players who received the scholarships and bursaries in 2009. The award presentation ceremony today at the SBA was graced by Mr Lee Yi Shyan, President of SBA and Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Manpower.
Mr. Tang Kin Fei, Sembcorp Group President & CEO, said: “Sembcorp is very pleased to support these young athletes as they pursue tertiary education in disciplines such as business and sports management. It is our hope that this will free them to continue pursuing their passion for sports, while encouraging them as they strive towards higher qualifications to equip themselves for their future careers.”
The scholarship programme is funded by Sembcorp under its Group-wide charitable fund which supports causes in aid of children, education and stroke assistance. Since the scholarship’s inception in 2007, the scholarships have been awarded to athletes from the football and badminton fraternities. Past receipients have included national badminton players Ronald Susilo, Kendrick Lee, Jiang Yanmei and Liu Fan Frances.
