Sembcorp Kicks Off Operations in Jurong Island's New Growth Area with the Opening of a S$40 Million Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant

August 01, 2012

- Also announces the development of a new technology and innovation centre for applied R&D in energy, water and industrial wastewater treatment

Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) is pleased to announce that it has begun commercial operation of its newest and largest industrial wastewater treatment facility on Jurong Island. The S$40 million plant expands Sembcorp’s presence on the petrochemical hub and kicks off its operations to serve chemical and petrochemical companies in the newly developed Banyan, Tembusu and Angsana districts of the island.

The 9,600 cubic metres per day industrial wastewater treatment plant, which will serve customers including LANXESS and Jurong Aromatics Corporation (JAC), can treat multiple streams of complex industrial wastewater and more than doubles Sembcorp’s current industrial wastewater treatment capacity in Singapore. The wastewater treatment plant is part of Sembcorp’s upcoming S$960 million cluster of facilities to serve companies setting up operations in the newly developed areas of Jurong Island. These include a combined-cycle gas turbine cogeneration plant with a capacity of 400 megawatts of power and 200 tonnes per hour of process steam and a multi-utilities centre, both currently under construction. With these new commitments, Sembcorp’s total investment in Jurong Island since 1995 reaches S$2.7 billion.

At the same time, Sembcorp also announced the development of a new technology and innovation centre comprising laboratories and applied research and development (R&D) facilities on Jurong Island. To be located on the same site as the company’s new cogeneration plant in Banyan, the centre will house Sembcorp researchers and engineers who will develop and integrate innovative processes and run test beds for emerging technologies relevant to the company’s business, with the objective of achieving further improvements in efficiency, cost and environmental sustainability. The centre will also provide quality control and technological support for Sembcorp’s energy, industrial water and wastewater treatment operations in Singapore and overseas.

Tang Kin Fei, Group President & CEO of Sembcorp Industries, said, “For over a decade, Sembcorp has built up specialised capabilities in treating multiple streams of concentrated industrial wastewater directly from customers on Jurong Island and other industrial sites internationally. With our new facility at Banyan, we will treat industrial wastewater from altogether 16 companies on Jurong Island, which is 100% of the outsourced demand from companies in the entire petrochemical hub. In addition, our new technology and innovation centre will also allow Sembcorp to develop and run test beds for innovative processes and technologies to better support our operations and ultimately, our customers.”

Sembcorp is a well-established provider of third-party outsourced utilities in the Sakra and Seraya districts of Jurong Island. The company has supplied a full range of energy, water and on-site logistics and services to chemical and petrochemical manufacturers for over a decade, a track record unrivalled on the island. It is a global leader in the treatment of multiple streams of industrial wastewater, able to treat high concentration industrial effluent with a chemical oxygen demand of up to 19,000 miligrammes per litre, as well as effluent with a salinity of up to 50,000 miligrammes per litre. Sembcorp also operates energy and industrial water and wastewater facilities serving customers in five chemical manufacturing and industrial sites in China, as well as on the Wilton International site in Teesside, UK.
