The story of Sembcorp’s evolution began in the mid-1990s when the Singapore government created Jurong Island (JI) as an offshore energy and chemicals hub through land reclamation. As Singapore attracted multinational companies to set up on JI , these companies required specialised utilities - an opportunity for Sembcorp to build and operate centralised facilities as a third-party provider.

Working with the Economic Development Board (EDB) and Tractebel, we built our first facilities, including Sembcorp Utilities and Terminals, to support JI’s tenants efficiently.

Over the years, we expanded our offerings, building key assets and developing strong partnerships beyond Jurong Island.

As Singapore’s first water reclamation provider, we have built up expertise in the treatment of multiple streams of industrial wastewater. Today, we embed sustainability in our water resources management by integrating water supply, wastewater treatment and water reclamation. In 2010, we completed the Sembcorp NEWater Plant, one of the largest water reclamation plants in the world.

Sembcorp Environmental Management Pte Ltd (SembEnviro) was established in 1999, and five years later became the first Singapore environmental services company to be conferred the prestigious International Headquarters (IHQ) status by EDB. As the forerunner in the environmental management services industry, SembEnviro had a presence in 17 cities and in five major countries including Australia, China, India and Malaysia. Its comprehensive range of turnkey environmental solutions included collection and post-collection of waste, recycling and resource recovery, waste-to-energy, conversion technologies, industrial and street cleansing, and environmental consultancy and technology.

In 2016, we entered the renewable energy sector and within a span of seven years, grew our solar business exponentially to become a major solar power player in Singapore, with 585MWp of solar projects across more than 4,200 sites in Singapore.

In 2022, we launched a new carbon management business GoNetZero™, a digital platform using blockchain technology that offers businesses one-stop access to renewable energy certificates, carbon credits and environmental attribute portfolio management.

In 2023, we opened the Sembcorp Energy Storage System (ESS), Southeast Asia’s largest ESS. Commissioned in six months, the utility-scale ESS has a maximum storage capacity of 285MWh, meeting the electricity needs of around 24,000 four-room HDB households for one day in a single discharge.

As we progress in our brown to green transformation, we are committed to creating a lower-carbon and sustainable future by focusing on innovation, bridging gaps and leading the change in the energy transition.
