- Transport decarbonisation push through conversion of its diesel waste management trucks to electric
- The Sembcorp Green EV Charging Hub to open for public use by 2022
Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp), through its waste management business SembWaste, today launched Singapore’s first solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at its Tuas depot.
The launch ceremony was officiated this morning by Guest of Honour, Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Transport. Mr Ng Lang, Chief Executive of the Land Transport Authority (LTA), was also present to witness the event.
In support of transport decarbonisation efforts under the Singapore Green Plan, SembWaste is gradually transitioning its reliance on diesel-powered trucks to electric trucks for refuse and recyclables collection. From this month, SembWaste will be introducing a fleet of electric trucks to support waste collection in the Clementi-Bukit Merah and City-Punggol municipal sectors. This fleet of electric trucks comprises approximately 20% of SembWaste’s operational fleet for these two sectors.
The Sembcorp Green EV Charging Hub at the Tuas depot will serve as a central charging station for Sembcorp’s fleet of waste and recycling electric trucks. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the hub is able to charge up to 18 industrial EVs via four-hour fast charging cycles and will have the capacity to conduct about 100 electric charging cycles per day.
Apart from supporting SembWaste’s fleet of trucks, which is currently the industry’s largest EV fleet, Sembcorp plans to open the facility for public use by other industrial vehicles by 2022. The Sembcorp Green EV Charging Hub would then be able to serve the needs of industries located in the Tuas region.
To provide for greener energy, the Tuas depot has been installed with 472 kilowatt-peak (kWp) of rooftop solar photovoltaic capacity which will go towards powering the facility. In addition, the depot is equipped with a Smart Energy Management System to manage its electric power consumption digitally, enabling efficient monitoring and optimisation of energy use.
Koh Chiap Khiong, CEO, Singapore and Southeast Asia, Sembcorp Industries, said: “Lowering carbon emissions has always been part of our company’s commitment towards environmental sustainability. With the launch of Singapore’s first solar-powered EV charging hub, Sembcorp is pleased to be supporting Singapore’s transport decarbonisation efforts, and look forward to opening up our hub for public use by other industrial vehicles.”
Neo Hong Keat, Managing Director of SembWaste, added: “Our investments in electrification, solarisation and digitalistion are part of our efforts to lead in the waste management industry’s transformation. We are proud that we will be deploying a significant fleet of electric vehicles supported by our upgraded depots to continue our provision of the essential service of waste collection to the public.”
