Sembcorp Supports Singapore’s Energy Diversification As Approved Biomethane Aggregator
October 23, 2026
Enhances Sembcorp’s low-carbon energy offering for data centre customers
Singapore, October 23, 2026 – Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp), has been selected by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) as an approved aggregator under its biomethane sandbox. The initiative is designed to support the development of Singapore’s biomethane market by enabling approved aggregators to facilitate the import, supply and use of biomethane for customers in Singapore.
Sembcorp is Singapore’s largest renewable energy player with over 1GWp of renewable energy capacity here. Sembcorp’s ability to offer low-carbon energy solutions is further enhanced through supplying power fuelled by biomethane. This low-carbon source is particularly important to new data centres, including the 200MW of data centre capacity awarded under the second Data Centre Call for Application initiative, which requires operators to source more than 50% of their power supply from green energy sources.
As an approved aggregator, Sembcorp will import up to 7.18 trillion British thermal units of biomethane annually, equivalent to approximately 120MW of electricity generation capacity. This represents one of the largest allocations awarded under the initiative.
Biomethane, a renewable gas produced from agricultural residues and other organic waste, provides Singapore with an additional low-carbon fuel option. Backed by the region’s abundant organic waste resources, biomethane has the potential to strengthen regional energy security and resilience while diversifying Singapore’s energy mix.
Koh Chiap Khiong, President & CEO, Gas and Related Services and CEO of Singapore, Sembcorp Industries, said, “Being selected as one of Singapore's first approved biomethane aggregators reflects Sembcorp's ability to bring together fuel supply, market demand and customer solutions at scale. With one of the largest allocations under the sandbox, we are well-positioned to help develop Singapore’s biomethane value chain and support the adoption of this emerging fuel. In doing so, we can contribute to Singapore’s energy transition and help meet growing power demand from an increasingly digital and AI-driven economy.”
Mr Wey-Len Lim, Executive Vice President, Singapore Economic Development Board, said, “Realising biomethane's potential as a decarbonisation pathway requires established energy players with the scale and expertise to develop the necessary frameworks for its adoption. Sembcorp’s appointment as one of three approved aggregators in the biomethane regulatory sandbox marks an important step forward in Singapore’s efforts to build a credible and sustainable biomethane ecosystem — one that will support our long-term climate and energy resilience goals."
